Paddle board or kayak: which to choose

Both are paddled, both leave from the same beach and both need calm water. The difference is standing or sitting, and that changes almost everything.

How a board and a kayak differ

Between paddle boarding and kayaking, the kayak is the choice for anyone who wants to paddle from the first minute with nothing to learn, sit down and stay out of the water, and the best one for going with children in a double kayak. Paddle boarding is for those who want the challenge of balance and do not mind getting wet: it needs a half-hour lesson and a few falls.

Both are best done first thing in the morning, on flat water, and both are called off in winds of 15 to 20 knots, because they count as light kit. If you are not sure, you do not have to choose for good: a couple or a group can split between board and kayak on the same morning and swap halfway.

How do paddle boarding and kayaking differ?

In posture and in the paddle. On a paddle board you stand and use a long paddle with a single blade, switching sides every few strokes. In a kayak you sit and use a double-bladed paddle, one blade on each side, alternating without letting go. Everything else follows from that difference.

Standing, you see more: the seabed when the water is clear and the coast from higher up. Sitting, you are steadier and closer to the water. A kayak can be single or double, and a double lets two people share the effort. On a board, everyone has their own.

Which is easier to start with?

Kayaking requires no prior learning: you get in, take the paddle and go. The only things worth knowing beforehand are which way to paddle given the wind and that the return always takes more out of you than the outward leg. For anyone who does not want to think about technique or balance, it is the straightforward option.

Paddle boarding needs a half-hour lesson before you start paddling on your feet, and the first session brings some falls. It is not difficult, but there is something to learn: where to put your feet, looking at the horizon, holding the paddle properly. For those who enjoy exactly that, feeling each outing go better than the last, the board is more addictive.

Which one keeps you drier?

The kayak, as far as falls go: you sit down and do not have to balance on your feet, which is what tips people off a board. But in a kayak everything ends up a little wet, because drips from the paddle land on your legs and the chop splashes. Anything that cannot take water stays ashore, and your phone goes in a waterproof pouch.

On a paddle board, on the first day you end up in the water several times, and you have to allow for that. With the mild water of early autumn, 23.2 °C off Fuengirola on 2 October 2026 according to Open-Meteo, it is no problem at all. In winter, for anyone who would rather not risk a cold dip, the kayak is more comfortable.

Which copes better with wind?

Neither is for windy days: below 15 knots almost anything is possible, and between 15 and 20 the light kit, which includes boards and kayaks, stays ashore. Within that margin, the kayak handles a breeze a little better, because someone sitting down gives the wind less to push against than someone standing.

The wind that calls for most care with both is the land breeze, which blows offshore from the north or north-west and pushes you out to sea even when it seems to do nothing at the water’s edge. The rule is the same for board and kayak: paddle into the wind first, parallel to the coast, and come back with it behind you. On a board, you can also switch to kneeling.

Which suits children or couples?

With young children, a double kayak is the simplest: the adult sits at the back, steers and does most of the work, and the child joins in with their own paddle without having to balance. The minimum age for each activity is confirmed when booking, and you need to give the children’s ages so there is a life jacket in their size.

As a couple, it depends on what you are after. A double kayak means paddling in time, which is either part of the fun or a source of arguments. Two boards let each of you keep your own pace, and so do two single kayaks. If one wants the challenge and the other would rather take it easy, a board and a kayak together work well.

What does each one work most?

On a board it is mainly the legs and core, which correct every wobble, and the stroke comes from the core more than the arms. In a kayak the shoulders and arms work harder, and the back too if you paddle for a long time. Both tire you more than you expect when the return is into the wind.

With both, sun protection is what you notice most the next day. The shoulders are the first thing to burn, so a rash vest or long-sleeved T-shirt is as useful on the board as in the kayak. Sun cream should be water-resistant and renewed every two hours, and the cap should have a strap.

Can you combine both on the same morning?

Yes, and it is a good way to decide. Both leave from the Puerto Deportivo de Fuengirola and the beach next to it, so you can start in a kayak and move to the board, or split up and swap halfway. When booking on +34 669 06 27 56, say which combination you want and how many people are coming.

The sea forecast helps decide the order: the home page of the website shows the wind, waves and water temperature off Fuengirola every half hour. With very flat water, the board first; if there is already some breeze, the kayak. If the forecast does not allow a safe outing, the date is changed at no cost.
