With and without a licence

Jet ski hire works in slots: they go from the beach in batches of fifteen minutes, which is what the standard hire lasts. You can run several together, and it works out cheaper the more people go.

If you hold a navigation licence or anything higher, you go out on your own. If you do not have one, you still go out: it is done with a guide and inside the authorised area, which is how the rules allow it.

All the skis take two or three riders, so you can go as a couple or with a child behind. The life jacket is in the price for everyone on board.

  • Life jacket and insurance included.
  • Without a licence you always go out accompanied and inside the buoyed area.

What is the difference between going out with a licence and without one?

With a navigation licence or anything higher you go out on your own, outside the buoyed area and with nobody following you, keeping the minimum distance from the beaches and the swimming buoys.

Without a licence you go out with a guide and inside an authorised area, which is exactly what the rules allow. The ride feels the same; what changes is how far you can go.

How do you ride a jet ski?

You accelerate with the right-hand trigger and steer with the handlebars, but there is one difference from a road bike that surprises everybody: with no throttle there is no steering. It is the jet that turns you, so to avoid something you accelerate, you do not brake.

The second thing you learn is how to get back on from the water after a fall, which happens to almost everyone the first time. You climb on from behind, with the ski stopped, and start again. It is nothing, and it is part of the deal.

Is it dangerous? What safety gear is there?

Every ski has a kill cord: a lanyard clipped to the rider's wrist that cuts the engine if they come off. The ski stops where it is instead of carrying on by itself, which is the real risk with this machine.

A life jacket is compulsory for everyone on board and is included. The minimum age to ride is 18; under-18s can go as passengers with a responsible adult. And the insurance covers the trip as long as the authorised area is respected.

How long does it last and how many can go?

The standard slot is fifteen minutes, which is what a jet ski trip lasts along almost all of this coast. You can run several slots back to back if you want longer.

The skis take two or three riders, so you can go as a couple or with a child behind. The more people on the same trip, the cheaper it works out each: the real cost is the ski and the guide, not the passenger.

When is the best time to go out?

Early in the morning, before the breeze arrives. On flat water the ski runs smoothly and you enjoy it; on a choppy sea it slams, and it tires your back and wrists more than you would think.

In July and August the beach fills up and the roped-off swimming area takes more space, so the early hours are also the clearest. In a strong easterly nobody goes out: that is not about comfort, it is about safety.

Can you hire a jet ski for the whole day?

You can run slots back to back, but it is not the usual thing and it rarely pays off. A jet ski is tiring: after forty minutes you feel it in your wrists, shoulders and lower back, especially if there is a bit of a chop.

The format that works best is a short slot repeated through the day, alternating with something else. A group that books jet skis in the morning and parasailing or the banana in the afternoon gets far more out of it than one that runs two straight hours on the ski.
