Kayaks, paddle boards, wakeboard, water ski and jet surf. Kit checked, life jacket included and a beginner's lesson if it is your first time.
All the kit goes from the beach and is hired by the hour, the half day or the full day. If it is your first time, there is a beginner's lesson before you are let loose: half an hour is usually enough for paddle boarding, and a bit more for wakeboard.
Kayaks are the cheapest option and the most rewarding: single or double, and they cope well even with a bit of a chop. Paddle boarding wants flatter water, so the best hours are first thing in the morning.
Wakeboard, water ski and kneeboard are towed behind a boat with an instructor, and they are hired in fifteen-minute slots because they tire you out more than they look.

The kayak, without a doubt. There is nothing to learn, you set off from the shore and you have the hang of it in five minutes. It is also the one that copes best if the sea is not completely flat.
Paddle boarding is the next step up: half an hour to learn, but it wants calm water. And if what you are after is speed, the kneeboard is the easiest of the towed ones: you stay on your knees and almost everyone gets up first go.
Half an hour to stay on your feet and paddle in a straight line. The hard part is not the paddling, it is standing up: you start on your knees, paddle until the board settles, and rise with one foot and then the other, looking at the horizon and not at your feet.
With a beginner's lesson you get further in an hour with someone than in four on your own, mostly because the instructor corrects the angle of the paddle, which is what makes the board wander off line.
All three are towed behind a boat with an instructor on board. Water ski uses two skis and is the most intuitive. Wakeboard is a single board, like a snowboard, and getting up is harder. Kneeboard is done on your knees on a short board and is the easiest of the three.
They are booked in fifteen-minute slots because they tire you out far more than they look from the shore: your arms and lower back load up quickly. With a group of four or five you take turns and get more out of the boat.
A surfboard with an engine. It needs no wave, no wind and no paddling: you control it with a handset in your right hand and with your body weight, and it reaches speeds that take people by surprise.
It is harder than it looks. The first fifteen minutes go almost entirely on learning to stand up and shift your weight without burying the nose. If you are coming to enjoy it, the sensible thing is to book two slots: the first is the learning, the second is the fun.
First thing in the morning for anything on a board. Before eleven the sea is usually flat and the thermal breeze has not arrived, which on the Costa del Sol comes up around midday and chops the water.
In wind, a paddle board turns into a sail and getting back to the shore takes twice as long. The kayak copes better and the towed kit depends on the boat, so those two have more room in the day.
Yes. Kayaks and paddle boards are hired by the full day and also for several days running, which is the option for anyone on holiday in the area who wants to go out every morning.
The towed kit — wakeboard, water ski, kneeboard and jet surf — does not work that way, because it depends on the boat and the instructor: there it is always slots, and what you book is the time band.

No. For the kayak you need nothing at all. For paddle boarding and wakeboard there is a beginner's lesson with an instructor, and for a first time it is worth it: you get further in an hour with someone than in four on your own.
First thing in the morning, before the breeze arrives. At midday in wind a paddle board turns into a sail and getting back is hard work. The kayak copes better if there is a bit of a sea.
