You can still go out. Some boats you steer yourself after a ten-minute briefing, and for the rest a skipper comes with you: in that case you need no licence and no sailing experience at all.

Hiring a boat on the Costa del Sol comes down to two questions: who holds the wheel, and how many of you are going. If you steer it yourself, the boat has to be one of those that can be handled without a licence, and you stay inside a marked area. If it goes out with a skipper, you need no licence at all and no sailing experience.
After that it is the size of the group that decides: up to six people, a small boat; seven to twelve, a motor boat with a skipper; above that, a catamaran or a crewed yacht.
Leaving from the Fuengirola marina you have the boats that can be taken without a licence, motor boats up to twelve metres with a skipper, the jet skis, and all the watersports kit: kayaks, paddle boards, wakeboard, water ski and jet surf.
From the beach itself go the activities that ask nothing of you as a sailor: parasailing, banana, donut ride, dolphin watching and celebration trips on board. All of it is booked at unit 367 in the marina, or over the phone.
The two yachts, the schooner, the three fishing boats and the sailing boat are moored in Puerto Banús. There is also a yacht in Estepona, a twelve-seat catamaran in Marbella marina and a hundred-passenger one in Málaga.
The office being in Fuengirola does not mean everything leaves from there. The boarding point is always confirmed when you book, because Fuengirola to Puerto Banús is a good half hour by car, and in August you have to add on finding a parking space.
It depends on the boat. Some can be handled with no licence at all inside the authorised area, after a ten-minute run-through on the pontoon covering how to start, steer, anchor and moor.
For the rest of the fleet a skipper comes with you, and then no licence and no previous experience are needed. Jet skis work the same way: with a navigation licence you ride on your own, and without one you go out with a guide inside the buoyed area.
The natural season runs from May to October, with the water between 18 and 24 degrees. July and August take most of the demand: you need to book days ahead, and the boats that need no licence are always the first to go.
June and September are the best months to be on the water and almost nobody makes use of them: the same weather, a flatter sea, coves without a queue of boats, and availability. From November to April you can sail perfectly well on the calm days, and that is when the best bottom-fishing days come.
For anything on a board — paddle, jet surf, wakeboard — the first hours of the morning, before the thermal breeze arrives. On the Costa del Sol the wind comes up around midday and chops the water, and a paddle board in wind turns into a sail.
For a trip on a boat the hour matters less than the route. And for sailing it is the other way round from the boards: the south-westerly breeze fills in during the afternoon, so an afternoon trip usually gives better sailing than a morning one.
A life jacket for every person on board, the compulsory safety kit checked before each trip, and the boat's insurance. That is not an extra on any of our prices.
And one guarantee worth knowing in advance: if the forecast makes it impossible to go out properly, the date is changed at no charge. Going out to see what happens is never worth it, and we do not charge for a trip that could not be done well.
