A fishing boat is not just any boat with rods on it: these are properly fitted-out craft, from 11 to 14 metres and up to 10 passengers. They carry rod holders, a live well and a sounder, and they go out with a skipper who knows the local grounds.
The normal day is a half day or a full day, setting off early. The skipper picks the spot according to the season and the forecast: bottom fishing is not the same as going out trolling.
If you do not bring tackle, it can be provided on board. What each person does have to bring is their own recreational sea fishing licence, which is issued by the Junta de Andalucía and which we do not provide.
It depends on the season. In summer bonito, frigate tuna and mackerel come in on the troll, and it is the most rewarding trip for anyone without experience because there is action. In winter you work the bottom more: pargo, dentex and sea bream, with fewer fish but bigger ones.
Spring is the changeover: the pelagics start moving and the skipper alternates trolling with sitting at anchor. The spot is decided on the day according to the water temperature and the forecast, not according to what worked last week.
The fishing boats in the fleet, from 10.9 to 13.7 metres, carry rod holders, a live well for live bait, a sounder to find the bottom and the shoals, and a cool box. That is what separates a fishing boat from an ordinary boat with rods on it.
Tackle can be provided on board if you do not bring your own. Anyone who has their own gear usually prefers to bring it: rods and reels are personal, and when trolling the difference between properly matched tackle and borrowed tackle shows.
Yes, and it is personal and non-transferable: everyone who is going to fish needs their own. The recreational sea fishing licence is issued by the Junta de Andalucía and can be obtained online in a few minutes.
We do not issue it and it is not included in the hire, and a licence from another Spanish region is not valid without checking the equivalence. It is the piece of paperwork most people forget and the one that can end in a fine at a check.
Early. The normal day starts at first light, between seven and eight depending on the season, because that is when the fish feed and when the sea is usually flattest.
A half day is four or five hours and is enough for one technique. The full day, eight hours, lets you troll in the morning and anchor at midday, which is how you really get the most out of a trip.
The fishing boats are moored in Puerto Banús, not in Fuengirola. Between the two marinas it is a good half hour by motorway, and in August you have to add the time to park.
Leaving from Puerto Banús gets you to the marks off Marbella and Estepona sooner. That is a real advantage on a fishing day: less time spent getting there and more time fishing.
Yes, and in summer is when it works best. Trolling — towing lures at low speed — asks for no technique: the skipper sets the gear up, puts it out and tells you when a fish is on. The beginner only has to reel in.
Bottom fishing is more demanding and slower: you have to feel the bite and respond in time. For a first time it is worth saying so when you book, because the skipper plans the day differently and picks techniques with more action even if the fish are smaller.
Whoever catches it takes it home. Recreational sea fishing lets you keep your catch for your own consumption, within the quotas and minimum sizes the rules set: in Andalucía there is a daily limit per person and a minimum size per species.
What you cannot do is sell it, or even give it to a restaurant. The boat carries a cool box to keep the catch during the day, and the skipper knows which fish have to go back for size or because they are out of season.
