How it works

You pick it up in half an hour. The hard part is not the paddling, it is standing up: you start on your knees and rise once the board is running steadily.

It wants flat water. The best hours are first thing in the morning, before the breeze arrives; at midday in wind the board turns into a sail and getting back is hard work.

If you want to learn properly there is a one-to-one lesson with an instructor instead of plain hire. For a first time it is worth it: you get further in an hour with someone than in four on your own.

  • Board, paddle, ankle leash and life jacket included.
  • With an afternoon wind, switch to a kayak.

How does paddle board hire in Fuengirola work?

Paddle board hire in Fuengirola is booked by the hour or for the full day, with the board, paddle, leash and life jacket included, and you set off straight from the beach. Anyone who has never tried it can ask for the beginner's lesson with an instructor: within half an hour most people are standing up and paddling in a straight line.

The sea sets the timing. The first hours of the morning bring flat water; when the breeze picks up around midday the board becomes hard to handle, and on those days it pays to switch to a kayak.

Which board suits which weight?

The more surface and volume a board has, the steadier it is. For someone starting out, or for a larger build, the wide board is the one that gets you standing on the first day; a narrow board is faster but assumes you already have the balance.

The classic beginner's mistake is to pick the board that looks best, which is usually the narrowest one, and spend the hour falling off. If it is your first time: wide and big, no argument.

How do you get back if the wind picks up?

On your knees, or lying down and paddling with your arms like a surfboard. Standing up, your body acts as a sail and the wind always wins; crouch down and that sail disappears, and the board moves.

It is the trick to know before you go out, because by the time you need it there is no time to learn it. On this coast the wind comes up around midday on almost every summer day, and anyone setting off at eleven can meet it on the way back.

Can you paddle board with children?

Yes, and it works very well: the child sits at the front and the adult paddles standing behind. The board carries the weight easily and the child enjoys it more than they would paddling themselves.

A minor does not take a board of their own: the law requires you to be 18 to handle a board or a kayak without a licence, so a child always shares the board with an adult. If a breeze comes up, the double kayak is the sensible option: you sit down, there is no balance to hold and the wind affects it far less.

Inflatable board or hard board?

For a paddle around, the inflatable wins. It is softer to fall on, it takes knocks against rocks and it floats with more volume, which is exactly what a beginner needs. The vast majority of hire boards are inflatable for that reason.

The hard board glides better and cuts the water more finely, and it is what people choose once they paddle confidently and want speed. For an hour on the beach in summer, the difference does not make up for the fragility: a hard board is damaged by a scrape an inflatable would not even notice.

How much exercise is it really?

More than it looks from the shore, and not in your arms. Paddle boarding works mainly your trunk and legs, because that is where the balance is held and the paddle is pushed with your body, not pulled with your shoulders.

Anyone who finishes with wrecked arms is paddling badly: if your arms hurt, there was not enough body in the stroke. A relaxed hour is a stroll; an hour at a pace is real training, and you feel it in your sides the next day.

Can the board get away from you?

That is what the leash is for, the cord joining your ankle to the board. It is always worn, and it is not a small detail: a loose board in a breeze moves away far faster than a person can swim, and recovering it stops being possible very quickly.

That is why a fall with the leash on is a dunking, and without it can be a serious problem. It is checked before you go in, along with the life jacket, and it does not come off for a photograph.

How long is it worth booking?

An hour is about right for a first time: enough to get standing, build some confidence and take a short paddle. Longer than that, as a beginner, turns into tiredness and falls caused by lack of strength rather than lack of technique.

Anyone who already paddles confidently tends to ask for two hours or the full day, particularly if the plan is to run along to a specific spot and stop there. In that case the departure time matters more than the duration: with the midday breeze, the outing changes character.

Which wind should you check before going out in Fuengirola?

Three winds rule this coast and each one calls for a different decision. The terral is the land wind: it arrives hot and dry from inland, blows from the beach out to sea and is the most treacherous one for a paddle board, because close to the shore the water looks like glass while it quietly carries you away. With terral, paddle boarding waits for another day.

The levante and the poniente blow along the coast, from the side. They will not push you out to sea, but they will carry you parallel to the beach: if you set off with the wind behind you, the way back is against it. The practical rule is to paddle into the wind first and come back with it behind you, when you have less energy left.

What should you wear for paddle boarding, and how warm is the water?

A swimsuit and a technical T-shirt or a long-sleeved rash vest. On a paddle board you stand in the sun for an hour without any shade, and a rash vest protects better than any sun cream. Sunglasses need a strap: they end up in the water more often than phones do.

The water in the bay of Fuengirola was at 23.2 degrees on 2 October 2026, according to the Open-Meteo data this website publishes every day on its home page. With the water at that temperature, falling in is part of the fun and nobody needs a wetsuit.

Can you go paddle boarding out of season?

Yes. October is one of the best months for paddle boarding in Fuengirola: the water keeps the warmth of the summer, the beach is quieter and there are more days of flat sea than in August. What changes is the light, because in early October the sun sets around eight in the evening and it is worth being back before then.

From November to April the water is colder and days of levante or poniente are more frequent, so the day is chosen by checking the sea forecast. A windless winter day, with a shorty wetsuit, is a paddle that few people know about.

Frequently asked questions

If it is not here, call us: two minutes on the phone and it is sorted.

Is it hard?

No. Most people are standing up within the first half hour, having never tried it. What makes paddle boarding hard is not the board, it is the wind: on choppy water holding a course takes twice the paddling. That is why it is worth going out first thing, when the bay at Fuengirola is usually flat.

What is the best time?

First thing in the morning, before the breeze arrives. At midday in wind the board turns into a sail and getting back is hard work.

What does the hire include?

Board, paddle, the leash that ties to your ankle, and a life jacket.

Is the lesson worth it?

For a first time, yes. You get further in an hour with an instructor than in four on your own.

Do you need to be able to swim?

It is advisable, although the life jacket is included and compulsory. Falling in a few times during the first hour is normal on a paddle board, and confident swimmers enjoy those falls instead of struggling with them.

Can you go out if there are waves?

With small waves you can paddle on your knees, but it is not much fun. If the sea is choppy the board moves too much for a beginner: that day it is better to switch to a kayak, which copes far better.
